Tech Hot Takes: Software Updates Should Cater to Niche Groups of Users
Wait just hear me out.
This may be a hot take and an infuriating one at that.
But Tech News has gotten so boring because eventually each company tries to cater to the masses.
I STILL remember when iOS 7 came out and it was one of the biggest updates in the Apple community.
But now, does the new iOS software update even matter if you aren’t getting the flagship iPhone of the year?
If Tech companies could create software updates that included easter egg updates for niche groups of users, it would bring back some excitement the Tech industry is lacking right now.
Niche Phone vs. Niche Features
Android vs. iPhone is the only smartphone debate ever happening these days.
But it seems to be less of a debate and more of a preference as both sides work to adopt the features of the other.
This begs the question of what should the tech companies focus on: niche phone design upgrades or niche feature upgrades?
Phone design requires innovation, new materials, and money spent towards R&D when we already have a form factor everyone is content with.
Niche feature upgrades are a slowly tapped avenue, I wish tech companies would pay more attention too.
By focusing on niche features, tech companies can refine:
Customizability
Voice Assistant capabilities
Accessibility & Language capabilities
AR/VR Integrations
I could also see there being less pressure for larger hardware improvements if incremental device upgrades are paired with tons of new software features.
What about you? Do you think tech companies should focus more on phone design and hardware or software and features?
