D3 1.1.4 - Dealing with Envy in the Workplace

Do you have a toxic workplace experience to share?

Did it involve:

  • Sabotage from other coworkers

  • Unsupportive management

  • Corporate backstabbing

  • Other? - please share in the comments!

Most of the people in the workforce have experienced some form of corporate politics and unfairness.

And in my experience, this type of toxicity comes from one place.

Where this toxicity comes from and how to deal with them like an artist is what we cover in Today’s BATCHEM.

Before You Act, Collect More Data

It is human nature to get triggered by the words and actions of other people.

But before you act, take a moment to observe the people around you more objectively.

One instance of a hostile work environment doesn’t mean the general work culture is hostile. Does it?

Or maybe your performance triggered the insecurities in someone around you.

Before you react emotionally, ask yourself:

Why do I feel bothered by these situations?

Identify which of your limiting beliefs are being triggered.

Or if the people around you are projecting their own beliefs and emotions onto you.

Work to change your own beliefs, so you remain unbothered despite the toxicity around you.

When You’re Unbothered & Toxicity Gets Worse

Now, I didn’t say remaining unbothered would reduce the toxicity.

But what it will do is reduce its effect on your internal peace and stability.

And it would be unfair if I didn’t warn you that your unbothered attitude can temporarily make matters worse.

So what do you do when things go from bad to worse?

What do you do when the people around you are dedicated to your downfall?

Be prepared to make hard choices and act in your own best interest.

Deciding the Next Best Move

The most underrated way of deciding is a Pros and Cons list.

Pros and Cons force you to make a case for AND against the decision.

In this case, the real question is:

Do the Pros of continuing to stay in this environment outweigh the Cons of quitting?

In my experience, most types of hostile work situations are isolated and few and far between.

And if you ignore the source of the toxicity, usually the person gets tired or finds a new target.

However, there are certain instances, where a bad apple has infected the bunch.

This bad apple will put more energy into sabotaging your job, than getting their work done.

In which case, it would be best to jump ship and save yourself.

Quickly too, before you also get infected by the toxic soup of insecurities, emotions, and corporate culture.
