Why I HATE Social Media: A RANT

It’s no secret that social media is becoming an increasingly critical part of our evolving society. Although there are great benefits, the culture it promotes is destroying our ability to connect with each other. Prior to taking an impromptu break from social media, I journaled the following rant. As someone who very much sees the value and potential social media brings to the marketplace, it's still important to know the signs and dangers of overindulgence or overuse of social media.

Social Media promotes a culture of passive-aggressive and non-confrontational discourse that is detrimental to health and social relationships. People have delusional ideas about the way the world works. Lately, it’s becoming clear that social media gives people a built-in facade to hide behind. It’s easy to avoid confrontation and conflict resolution when you can disguise your true thoughts and feelings in a subliminal post or shady meme.

Just as easy as it was for you to write the subliminal post is as easy as it should be to have a conversation with whom the post was directed. People are afraid of confronting the same people they care about. But if you care, wouldn’t you want to get on the same page and work it out?

Well, on one hand, some people are not worth the extra effort. Some people are not interested in stepping outside of their delusional, narcissistic bubble of reality. So in their self-destruction and self-sabotage, everything triggers feelings of defensiveness as if being personally attacked.

These platforms have created a stage and given a microphone to the mentally unstable and morally inept. Unfortunately, where previously comedy, entertainment, and trash TV were available 30-45 minutes a week, it is now on-demand 24/7. Not to mention,  the increase in misinformation is growing as exponentially as the number of people diseased and anxious. How can these upcoming generations overcome the hurdles of their ancestors if they are actively creating new ones?

It seems that the more technology advances, the higher the decline in communication and emotional intelligence. There is also a huge decline in authentic social connections. Now the dating scene and culture of romantic relationships are equally damaged because people don’t know how to connect with each other on a deeper level.

Whatever your relationship with social media, it's between you and your creator. However, it is worth talking about the concerning impacts social media has on our mental health and capacity for social connections.
